Product Description
Every brand that comes to us with a chlorophyll capsule project starts with the same question: "How is this different from the 50 other chlorophyll products on Amazon?"
The honest answer? Most of them aren't. Same ingredient, same dosage claim, same vague label. The brands that win aren't selling "more chlorophyll" — they're selling a formula the customer can actually trust.
That trust starts with three manufacturing decisions most factories never discuss with you: where the chlorophyll comes from, which chemical form you're actually using, and how much copper your customer ingests with every capsule.
We've been making chlorophyll products for 28 years. Here's what we've learned.
Why Source, Form, and Copper Matter
The Source Problem
Not all chlorophyll is equal — and it starts before any capsule is filled.
Chlorophyll for supplements is extracted from plant material. The three main sources we work with:
Source | Characteristics | Best For |
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) | FDA-recognized source for SCC production; consistent chlorophyll yield; well-documented safety profile | Regulatory compliance, US/EU markets |
Mulberry leaf | Higher chlorophyll concentration per kg biomass; seasonal availability | High-potency formulas |
Spirulina/Chlorella | Contains chlorophyll plus complementary nutrients (protein, iron, B vitamins); lower chlorophyll density | Superfood blend formulas |
FDA's listing for sodium copper chlorophyllin (21 CFR 73.125) specifically limits the chlorophyll source to alfalfa for food-grade applications. If your target market includes the US, this isn't optional — it's a regulatory requirement.
We source chlorophyll from certified alfalfa cultivation, with full traceability from field to finished capsule.
The Form Problem
Here's what almost no product label tells you: the "chlorophyll" in most capsules is not natural chlorophyll at all.
Natural chlorophyll (chlorophyll a/b) is fat-soluble, unstable under light and heat, and poorly absorbed in the human digestive tract. Studies show that natural chlorophyll has bioavailability below 5%, and degrades rapidly during gastric digestion into Mg-free pheophytin derivatives (Hayes & Ferruzzi, 2020; Tumolo & Lanfer-Marquez, 2012).
That's why the supplement industry uses Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin (SCC) — a semi-synthetic derivative where:
- The central magnesium atom is replaced with copper (improving stability)
- Ester groups are removed through saponification (making it water-soluble)
- Bioavailability increases significantly compared to natural chlorophyll
SCC is the right ingredient for a chlorophyll capsule. But it introduces a third decision that most manufacturers ignore: copper content.
The Copper Problem
SCC contains 4–6% total copper by molecular structure (21 CFR 73.125). Free (ionizable) copper must not exceed 200 ppm per FDA specification.
Here's what we see in the market:
- A popular brand's 50 mg SCC softgel delivers 2 mg of copper per capsule — 222% of the Daily Value
- Most brands don't test or disclose copper content at all
- Some raw material suppliers ship SCC with free copper levels near the 200 ppm limit
For a product taken daily, copper accumulation matters. JECFA established an ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) of 0–15 mg/kg body weight for sodium copper chlorophyllin (JECFA, TRS 631). That's generous — but your customer may already be getting copper from other supplements, multivitamins, or diet.
Our standard: We control free copper to <100 ppm — half the FDA limit — and provide full copper content disclosure for every batch. Your label can state exact copper per serving.

How We Protect Chlorophyll During Manufacturing
Chlorophyll and SCC degrade under three conditions: light, heat, and oxygen. Most manufacturers lose 10–30% of active content between raw material receipt and finished product — and never test for it.
Our Light-Heat-Oxygen Control Protocol
Production Stage | Risk | Our Control |
Raw material receipt | Light exposure during transport | Opaque foil-lined packaging; cold storage (15–25°C) |
Powder blending | Heat from friction | Low-speed blending; temperature monitored <35°C |
Capsule filling | Light + oxygen exposure | Enclosed filling equipment; nitrogen-flushed chamber |
Bottling | Oxygen headspace | Nitrogen purging before capping; residual O₂ <2% |
Storage | Cumulative light + heat | Temperature-controlled warehouse; amber/opaque packaging |
Result: We maintain >95% active retention from raw material to finished product (verified by UV-spectrophotometry at 405 nm and 630 nm per FCC specifications). Industry standard is 70–90%.
This matters because your customer expects the dosage on the label to match what's actually in the capsule at month 24 — not just at day 1.
What the Research Says
We don't make health claims on behalf of our clients' brands. But we stay current on the science so we can help you position your product accurately.
What SCC does well (based on published research):
- Forms molecular complexes with aflatoxins, reducing biological uptake — a randomized double-blind trial in Qidong, China found 100 mg SCC taken 3× daily for 4 months reduced urinary aflatoxin-DNA adducts by ~55% compared to placebo
- Supports white blood cell recovery — historical clinical data showed oral SCC at 180 mg TID increased leukocyte counts by >30% in 2 weeks
- Internal deodorizing — decades of clinical use for colostomy and wound odor management
- Antioxidant activity — in vitro evidence of free radical neutralization and lipid peroxidation reduction
What the evidence is still developing on:
- Gut microbiome modulation (animal studies promising; human data limited)
- Metabolic and weight support (rodent data; no large human trials)
- Energy enhancement (marketing claim exceeds current evidence)
Our position: Help your brand make claims the science supports. We'll flag anything that overreaches — because regulatory compliance protects both you and us.
Chlorophyll Capsules vs. Liquid Chlorophyll
Your brand needs to decide: capsule or liquid? Each has trade-offs.
Factor | Capsules | Liquid Drops |
Dosing precision | Exact per capsule | Requires measuring; variability |
Taste/palatability | No taste (encapsulated) | Grassy/metallic; needs flavor masking |
Portability | Travel-friendly | Spill risk; requires dilution |
Staining risk | None | Can stain teeth, tongue, clothing |
Absorption speed | Standard GI release | Faster (pre-dissolved) |
Shelf stability | Higher (sealed, light-protected) | Lower (opened repeatedly, light exposure) |
Consumer preference | Growing — avoids taste complaints | Trending on social media |
Our recommendation: If your target customer discovered chlorophyll through TikTok or Instagram, they may want liquid. If they're a daily supplement user who values consistency and convenience, capsules win. We can produce both formats — and help you decide which fits your brand positioning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between "chlorophyll" and "sodium copper chlorophyllin" on the label?
A: Natural chlorophyll is fat-soluble and unstable. Sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) is the water-soluble, stabilized derivative used in virtually all commercial chlorophyll supplements. If a product says "chlorophyll" but doesn't mention SCC, check the supplement facts panel — it's almost certainly SCC listed as "chlorophyllin copper complex" or "sodium copper chlorophyllin." We help you label transparently.
Q: How much copper is safe in a daily chlorophyll capsule?
A: FDA limits free copper in SCC to <200 ppm. JECFA's ADI is 0–15 mg/kg body weight. A 50 mg SCC capsule contains roughly 2 mg total copper. We recommend disclosing copper content per serving on your label — most competitors don't, and consumers are increasingly checking. Our formulas keep free copper below 100 ppm (half the FDA limit).
Q: Can you make a "true chlorophyll" capsule without copper?
A: Not practically. Natural chlorophyll contains magnesium (not copper), but it's fat-soluble, degrades within days under normal storage, and has extremely low oral bioavailability (<5%). Zinc-chlorophyllin exists but isn't widely approved for supplements. SCC with copper is the industry standard for good reason — it works. The key is controlling copper levels, not eliminating them.
Q: Why do some brands claim 1000–3000 mg of chlorophyll per serving?
A: Those numbers typically include the weight of raw plant material (alfalfa powder, spirulina) that contains chlorophyll — not the purified SCC content. Actual SCC in a "3000 mg chlorophyll" product may be 100–200 mg. We help you understand the difference so your label claims are accurate and defensible.
Q: What source material do you use for chlorophyll extraction?
A: We use certified alfalfa (Medicago sativa) as our primary source — it's the only source FDA recognizes for food-grade SCC production (21 CFR 73.125). For superfood blend formulas, we can incorporate spirulina or chlorella as complementary ingredients alongside SCC.
Q: How do you ensure the chlorophyll doesn't degrade before it reaches the customer?
A: Three controls: (1) Nitrogen-flushed production environment to prevent oxidation; (2) Low-temperature processing (<35°C) throughout blending and filling; (3) Light-protective packaging as standard. We verify >95% active retention at expiry through UV-spectrophotometric testing. Most factories don't test for this — we do, per batch.
Q: What is the minimum order quantity?
A: Our minimum order quantity for chlorophyll capsules is 100,000 capsules (approximately 800–1,600 bottles depending on fill count). Trial orders are available for new brand partnerships.
Q: How long is the delivery time?
A: Sample production takes 5–7 working days. Bulk production takes 15–20 working days for standard formulas; custom formulations with complex blends may require 20–25 working days. We provide weekly production updates and pre-shipment samples for approval.
