Product Description

Most magnesium capsules on the market use oxide — the cheapest form, with 60% elemental magnesium but only 4% absorption. A 500mg oxide capsule delivers roughly 10mg of usable magnesium. A glycinate capsule with the same label claim delivers 5–6 times more.

The magnesium form you choose doesn't just affect your marketing position. It determines your capsule size, your daily serving count, your raw material cost, and the production protocols your manufacturer must follow. Each form has a different density, flow behavior, moisture sensitivity, and encapsulation requirement. Treating them all the same way — which most contract manufacturers do — leads to inconsistent potency, stability failures, and products that underdeliver.

We've manufactured magnesium capsules in 6 different forms over the past 28 years. Here's what procurement teams need to know before placing an order.

Magnesium Form Selection: What the Label Doesn't Tell You

Every magnesium compound delivers a different percentage of elemental magnesium. The rest is carrier molecule weight. This has a direct impact on how many capsules your customer needs to take daily — and how much the product actually costs to produce.

The oxide paradox: Oxide looks impressive on a label — "500mg Magnesium" from just 830mg of powder, fitting easily into a single Size 0 capsule. But at 4% absorption, the customer gets roughly 12mg of usable magnesium. Glycinate, at 14% elemental content, requires 2,860mg of powder for the same 400mg elemental claim — that's 4 capsules at Size 00. The product costs more, but the customer actually absorbs the magnesium.

This is the conversation most manufacturers avoid. We help brands make an informed decision based on their target market, price positioning, and efficacy requirements — not just what fits cheapest into a capsule.

Why Magnesium Capsule Manufacturing Is Form-Specific

Each magnesium form behaves differently on the production floor. A manufacturer that runs oxide and glycinate through the same hopper settings, blending speed, and environmental controls is asking for quality problems. Here's what we control for each form:

Flow & Filling Behavior

Magnesium oxide is dense (bulk density ~0.35–0.50 g/mL) and flows freely through encapsulation hoppers. It compresses easily and fills uniformly — which is why it's the easiest form to manufacture and the cheapest to produce.

Magnesium glycinate has lower bulk density (~0.30–0.40 g/mL) and a fluffier particle structure. It flows well through amino acid transporters in the gut, but on the production floor it requires calibrated feeder speeds and vibration settings to maintain fill uniformity.

Magnesium citrate is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air and clumps. During humid seasons, citrate can absorb enough water to alter fill weight by 3–5%. We maintain production environment at ≤40% RH for citrate formulations and use anti-caking agents where formulation permits.

Magnesium L-threonate is temperature-sensitive. Extended blending at elevated temperatures can degrade the compound. We run threonate batches in temperature-controlled environments (≤25°C) with shortened blending cycles.

This is the conversation that should happen before formulation begins. If your brand positioning is "500mg magnesium in 1 capsule," you're locked into oxide or a blend with a high oxide ratio. If your positioning is "high-absorption magnesium," your customer needs to take 3–4 capsules daily — and your packaging, cost structure, and marketing all need to reflect that.

Customization Options

Magnesium Form: Single-form or multi-form blends. We help select the optimal form(s) based on your target market positioning.

Capsule Type: Gelatin or HPMC vegetarian. HPMC recommended for hygroscopic forms (citrate, threonate) due to lower moisture content.

Capsule Size: Size 00, 0, 1 — selected based on form density and target fill weight.

Co-Ingredients: Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) for enhanced magnesium uptake; zinc for immune support; vitamin D3 for bone health synergy; L-theanine or melatonin for sleep-positioned formulas.

Packaging: HDPE bottles with desiccant (recommended for citrate/threonate), blister packs, bulk packaging.

Label Claims: We provide documentation to support elemental magnesium content claims, form-specific structure/function statements, and compliance with US (DSHEA) and EU (Food Supplements Directive) requirements.

Chelation verification (glycinate)

FT-IR / HPLC

≥98% chelation integrity

For magnesium glycinate, we verify chelation integrity on every batch — because some raw material suppliers sell "glycinate" that is partially unreacted oxide blended with free glycine. This is a widespread industry issue that affects potency, absorption, and label accuracy. FT-IR spectroscopy confirms the magnesium-glycine bond is intact before we release the material for production.

Our Magnesium Production Track Record

  • 150+ magnesium batches manufactured across 6 forms over the past 5 years
  • Magnesium glycinate: most requested form; used in 60+ sleep and stress formulas
  • Magnesium citrate: common in digestion-health and all-round positioning
  • Magnesium oxide: produced for brands targeting budget segments and laxative-positioned products
  • Magnesium L-threonate: 8 batches for premium cognitive brands; full chain-of-custody documentation provided
  • Content uniformity: CV ≤ 2.5% across all magnesium forms (industry average 3–5%)
  • Stability failures: 3 batches out of 150+ required rework — all were citrate formulations during high-humidity season, before we upgraded to dehumidified production zones

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is magnesium glycinate more expensive than oxide if both claim "500mg magnesium"?

A: The difference is in elemental magnesium content and manufacturing cost. Oxide contains 60% elemental magnesium, so 830mg of magnesium oxide provides 500mg of elemental magnesium. Glycinate contains only 14% elemental magnesium, so you need 3,570mg of magnesium glycinate for the same 500mg elemental claim. That means more raw material, larger capsules, and more capsules per serving. Additionally, the chelation process to bond magnesium with glycine is more expensive than the simple calcination process used to produce oxide. The cost difference is real — glycinate raw material costs 8–12 times more per kilogram than oxide.

Q: Can you make a "high absorption" magnesium capsule using only 1 capsule per serving?

A: Not with any form other than oxide, and oxide's poor absorption makes "high absorption" claims difficult to justify. For genuine high-absorption positioning (glycinate, citrate, or a chelated blend), a 400mg elemental magnesium serving requires 3–4 capsules at Size 00. We've had brands attempt to reduce serving size by lowering the elemental magnesium per capsule, but this creates a gap between label claims and consumer expectations. We recommend being transparent: "Take 3 capsules daily for 400mg of highly bioavailable magnesium" builds more trust than claiming one capsule delivers results that it chemically cannot.

Q: What's the issue with magnesium glycinate raw material authenticity?

A: Some suppliers sell magnesium glycinate that is actually a physical blend of magnesium oxide and free glycine, not a true chelate. The oxide provides elemental magnesium content; the glycine is listed as a separate ingredient. This is not real magnesium glycinate — the magnesium ion is not bonded to the glycine molecule, so it doesn't benefit from amino acid transporter absorption. We verify chelation integrity using FT-IR spectroscopy on every glycinate batch. A true chelate shows a characteristic absorption peak that confirms the magnesium-glycine bond. This test costs extra but prevents you from selling a product that doesn't deliver what the label claims.

Q: Which magnesium form works best for sleep-positioned products?

A: Magnesium glycinate is the standard choice for sleep and relaxation positioning. Glycine itself acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter that lowers core body temperature, which promotes sleep onset. Many brands pair glycinate with L-theanine, melatonin, or chamomile extract for a comprehensive sleep support formula. We currently produce 12+ sleep-positioned magnesium glycinate formulas for different brands. Citrate is sometimes used in sleep blends for cost optimization, but it lacks the additional calming effect of glycine.

Q: What is your MOQ for magnesium capsules?

A: MOQ depends on the magnesium form and formula complexity. For single-form products (oxide, citrate, glycinate), MOQ starts at 100,000 capsules. For premium forms (L-threonate, taurate), MOQ is typically 200,000 capsules due to higher raw material cost and more specialized sourcing. Final MOQ is confirmed after formula review and capsule size selection.

Q: How long does production take?

A: Standard production cycle is 6–8 weeks: formula confirmation and raw material preparation (2–3 weeks), encapsulation and packaging (2–3 weeks), testing and documentation (1–2 weeks). For L-threonate or other specialty forms, add 1–2 weeks for raw material sourcing and chain-of-custody verification.
