In 2020, a European brand contacted us after their hangover recovery drink was flagged on Amazon. Under section 201(ff)(3)(B)(i) of the Act, products containing NAC cannot be sold as dietary supplements unless NAC was marketed as a food or supplement before that drug approval date. The FDA has found no such evidence. This means NAC is not a legal dietary supplement ingredient — yet it appears in dozens of hangover recovery products, including from manufacturers who should know better.

Key formulation insights from 28 years of liquid production:

DHM is the biggest formulation bottleneck. Native DHM dissolves at only 0.2 mg/mL in cold water, has an oral bioavailability estimated below 10%, and degrades above pH 6.0. A "hangover shot" that claims meaningful DHM content needs a solubilization strategy — cyclodextrin inclusion complexes, glycerin-propylene glycol solvent systems, or water-soluble DHM variants processed with dispersion technology. If your manufacturer simply adds DHM powder to water, it will precipitate, taste terrible, and deliver a fraction of the labeled dose.

B-vitamins and electrolytes are easy to add but hard to balance. Both are water-soluble and stable, but at the doses needed for a recovery product, they create a salty-metallic taste that requires a structured flavor architecture. More importantly, high electrolyte concentrations push osmolality above the 280–320 mOsm/kg sweet spot, slowing absorption instead of accelerating it.​​​​​​​

Prickly pear is the most liquid-friendly herbal option. Unlike DHM and milk thistle, prickly pear extract is moderately water-soluble, has a naturally fruity taste, and actually improves palatability. The Tulane University study found that prickly pear extract taken before drinking reduced hangover symptoms by approximately 50% — but this was a prevention protocol, not a treatment, and the study has not been replicated at scale.​​​​​​​
